Why Do We Cover the Challah?
We place a challah cover over the two challos on Shabbos and Yom Tov for two reasons. First, it recreates the manna, which lay encased between two layers of dew; the challos sit between the board (or tablecloth) below and the cover above. Second, we cover the bread so it is not "shamed" while we recite kiddush over wine before hamotzi. A beautiful challah cover honors the mitzvah and completes the table.
